Hi! I'm looking at houses in Omaha from North Carolina. I'm originally from Iowa, but I've never spent too much time in Omaha. There's a house I really like near Maple Street and 40th. How is that area? I know a couple people already in the Omaha area but they don't know too much about the area I'm looking in. Also, what neighborhood would that area fall under? I've seen Malcolm X as well as Benson and Bedford when I try to find any information. I'm hoping to hear from people who have lived near there or know people who do. Thanks so much!

Some will tell you it's one of the worst areas in Omaha. It is referred to as "The Ghetto" here in Omaha. However, I have spent a lot of time in that area and I have never had issues personally. A lot of good people without a lot of money, and a few bad eggs. I think you'd be alright.

I would avoid the area. The crime rates are among the highest in the Omaha area.

It's a pretty typical working class neighborhood. I wouldn't have a problem living in that general area, and when I lived in Omaha we weren't that far away either.

Not worth it. Omaha is so cheap in the safe areas that I can't think of a single reason why you'd live in an unsafe area.

There's nothing inherently unsafe about 40th and Maple.

My brother used to live at 43rd & Maple. As far as I know, he never had any problems with his neighbors.

I's say it's all relative. Crime in omaha really is not "high" to start with. That said, that area is in the upper half of neighborhoods for crime rate, but is about on par for east omaha. My South Omaha neighborhood is ranked as "high" crime by omaha standards, but in the 30+ years I have lived in the neighborhood I have never had issues and to my knowledge there have been on 3 killings in that time within 1 mile (so less than 1 every 10 years, I'd call that safe).

If looking at east omaha, you could do better, but you clearly can do worse.

If you look at omaha data dot com, a good website set up by the World Herald, you see that 90% of murders in 2015 were in East Omaha. Go west and the crime drops precipitously. For people moving here without connections or history that root them to east Omaha, they should live in West Omaha, where it is safer, and where there is good shopping and restaurants. If the OP has a particular reason for targeting the 40th/Maple area, they should chime in.
