I've been trying to read whatever I can regarding the Anadarko area, and whether it might be a good idea to accept a federal position there, should it be offered. Can anyone give suggestions/opinions on the negatives for the area?

I don't want to offend anyone, however after reading many postings regarding other areas near or on American Indian reservations in several states, I did read there is some intolerance and negativity towards white people. (I realize not everyone is prejudiced regardless of each race, however I would not want to move myself and my young daughters to an area where the predominant viewpoints are mistrust, hatred and/or negativity based on our skin color).

Of the 5 other locals that had similar federal positions I'm qualified for, Anadarko sounded like it might be a bit more diverse, and was hoping therefore more accepting of "outsiders"? It seems weird to ask these things in this day and age, but I realize whenever someone is an outsider, ESPECIALLY in small communities with such close knit traditions and people, it may be VERY difficult to ever fit in, or feel a part of a community.

Anyone know about the housing rental opportunities around there? I can't find an online newspaper other than in Lawton.. which they are plentiful, but didn't quite want that far of a commute if I could help it.

Also read they had an F-2 tornado recently.. do they hit that area often? We get them here in KY too, but hear of many more in OK, TX etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this job closes tonight, so I will apply for it, but IF by chance they do offer it to me, I'd love to know whether this might be a great move for the kids and I?

Thanks everyone for reading this book!

I'd move there tomorrow. I like that part of the country. The young lady that served us at Sonic a few days ago was pretty and pleasant. The walmart looks new and big.

You need to understand something about Oklahomans......we are almost ALL ndns....at least part. You act like a decent human and they will treat you the same. you act scared or like a jerk and they will shun you.......

Remember it IS a small town. The locals are going to be shy......particularly school aged kids.......that does not make them intolerant or negative.

oh yeah, about the tornadoes...............
I'm sure you won't get more than 5 or 6 little tornadoes a year there......maybe just one or two big ones...........

Thank you Goodpasture..

I didn't know how to word my questions so they didn't sound paranoid or accusatory, so thanks for the understanding and info!

We are a quiet family that loves small towns. I've lived in 7 states and been in the military, so I've moved a lot and seen many different areas of our beautiful country. I can adapt to just about anywhere (except despise large city living!)

American Indian culture, folklore, art, dances, etc. are fascinating and something I believe we would very much enjoy learning more about/seeing/hearing. We are polite, kind, quiet, educated and hard working. My girls are 12 and 4 and have the personalities that are outgoing and friendly which thankfully helps break the ice when they are the new kids on the block! I don't believe we would have a problem fitting in to anywhere, as long as we are given a chance! Sounds like you have a positive attitude about the area, so it's nice to hear!

Re: the tornadoes.... wow 5 or 6 a year? That seems a lot to hit the same area!! and 1 or 2 big ones.. yikes.. that sort of scares me.. however I'm a native Californian who lived through the 89 earthquake (epicenter 10 miles away from our house in Santa Cruz) and millions of little tremblers.. so kind of used to natural disasters.

He's only exaggerating. In Stillwater, we've only had 2 big tornados in the last 50 years. I don't think there is hardly such a thing as a little tornado. If some storm can cause noticeable damage to your home, I wouldn't judge it as small. I bet old timers in a number of Oklahoma towns can't ever remember a tornado hitting their town.

yeah, but that is Stillwater....Pickens wouldn't let anything more happen there.............Anadarko has over 350% more tornados than the national average...........wasn't there an F5 there some time back that killed 30 or 40 people?

RE: tornadoes...I live closer to OKC. When they start tracking the storms and they mention Anadarko in the path, then we get antsy. The storms usually follow I-44. But we've only heard the siren a couple times during the past 3 years.

Anadarko...the x-roads of the Chisholm Trail (US 81) and US 62. A noble place. Coming from rural KY, I bet you'll do fine here!
