Medicare and Medicaid (Sooner) in Oklahoma do not provide dental or glasses, but I have learned that there is a clinic opening up in Tahlequah that will charge way, way less for dental work if you have a low income. I don't know if they deal with glasses.

But Medicare and Medicaid will pay for you to go to an eye doctor if you have an eye disease. They just don't provide you will glasses and exam.

I do not know if you have both insurances if you can get hearing aids or not.

Maybe property taxes go down when you go to Arkansas, but if you are 65 you can get a tax freeze in Oklahoma. And we learned that our property taxes will lower if we apply for homestead. I am not sure how much lower, but we are seeing the tax people this week since we just found that they want $650 or so a year for taxes. Will also find out about my husbands VA disability.

the little bit of research we have done which is very little so far, indicates taxes are lower in OK but Ar seems to have advantages for seniors. As for medicare and medicade, I am hoping there is some type of insurance like we had both, in Texas and here that will be a supliment to our medicare for very little extra. The biggest problem we have with our present insurance, it also doesn't cover dental. It does help with eye care.We had the homestead thing in both Texas and here plus we just found out in NM we get a property break if we are over 65 and middle or lower income.

Right now hubby is leaning toward OK and I, Ar. The next few months should be interesting. I do know, whatever we do, it won't be til this time next year.

I understand that the OK legislature just passed a bill that will not allow any town or city to pay for illegal immigrants anymore, schools, hospitals, etc. if the is true is would be a great advantage to anyone to move to OK. Anyone know anything about this?

It's a state law now, or will be soon; something like November. And it is a great advantage for the State of Oklahoma - I applaud the legislature and Gov. Henry for doing the right thing - something no other state seems to be willing to do.

Wow, that is great. We can hardly take care of some of the poor here, so it will be nice to not be taking care of illegals too. Guess they will run back down to Texas, CA, or AZ or NM. I happen to like Mexicans and S.A.s, but things should be done legally, and I think they should rebel against their own government and not our's. They need a revolution. I do like a diversity of races in a city, so I hope that most who live here are already legal.

Seems like I have heard other good things about Gov. Henry, but I don't recall just what.

According to our extremely conservative 23 year old grandson in law, he is a democrat that is to the right of many Republicans. Just what he has said, I have no idea. NMNita

Yes, here's a link that explains it all along with a bit of a debate.

For me, it is a big drawing card.

Are we saying that property taxes in Arkansas are higher than Oklahoma? If so, then a freeze on them when you are 65

This is what I found:

Also, in 2001 a $300 homestead real estate property tax credit was granted to all homeowners and the appraised value was frozen for all homeowners over 65 living in Arknasas. The result is the one of the lowest property tax in the United States.

http://www.arkansas.gov/dfa/income_t...questions.html

What Are Special Property Tax Exemptions?

A disabled veteran, who has been awarded special monthly financial compensation by the Veteran's Administration (VA), is exempt from all state taxes on the homestead and personal property if: 1.) there is the loss of or the use of one or more limbs; 2.) total blindness in or both eyes; and 3.) the loss of service connected to one-hundred percent (100%) of a person's total and permanent disability. This exemption is extended to a veteran's unmarried surviving spouse and his or her minor children.
The Arkansas Homestead Property Tax Refund Act allows a refund to certain lower-income residents age 62 years old or older or disabled persons as defined in Title XIX of the Social Security Act, or a non-service connected disabled veteran, who own and reside in their home. The refund is for part or all of their real estate taxes paid up to $300. This refund is limited to residents with annual household incomes of $25,000 or less for the tax year 1999. The income limit is raised to $30,000 or less for the tax year 2000.
Qualified residents should file for their property tax refund as soon as possible after December 31 the year the tax was paid. To claim a refund or to obtain eligibility information, call the Department's Property Tax Refund Unit at (501) 682-7265.

Jessaka, what does OK offer or do they offer anything? We are going to leave for Las Vegas tomorrow morning for a week and when we get back home we plan on setting up dates to start investigating OK and AR. I think we will make a trip over in about 3 more weeks. Hubby is leaning toward OK, but I want to see what is best for us retired folks before I say much. Nita

I don't know what you mean by what does OK offer? Which may mean they offer nothing since I don't know. LOL. So "offer" in the way of what?

I think what I would want to know is, are Arkansas homes more expensive, and if so is the property tax more expensive as a result? If so, then I don't think a freeze is as good of a freeze as OK's. Does that make sense?

I seem to spend a lot of my time in AR traveling and shopping, more than I do OK. I just like the Ozarks. But I knew that Fayetteville area was more expensive than OK because my friend wanted to move there and decided that she would have to move an hour east of Fayetteville in order to have a cheaper home, one she could afford. West of Fayetteville is being built up fast and cost more. One of my other friends who lived in Tahlequah said that she had lived in AR and it was racist, and that bothered me. Is arkansas really racist?
