Greetings, we are semi-retired and looking for property in SE Oklahoma to be near our daughter who is going to SOSU in Durant.

We are very conservative, evangelical Christians . . interested in missions and anything outdoors.

We are looking at property on the river near Antlers. But I have seen some posts suggesting it is not a nice area. We are visiting this weekend to look at the property and I would love feedback that we can trust . . as opposed to what the realtor has to say

Thanks in advance!

Antlers area is beautiful. For people who like the outdoors, its very nice.

It's law west of the Pecos there though. Outlaw territory.

There are some threads about the Antlers area on this forum. I've never been to SE OK so I've no opinion. I read some comments and SE OK is described as beautiful country. Some posters, a few who grew up in the area, warn that the country areas outside of towns like Antlers harbor the drug trade.

Are you saying it is a dangerous area
or
are you saying that the law enforcement is corrupt?

(or both??)

Thanks for your input. I've searched and read these threads. I guess I should try to find out about drugs in the specific areas we are looking at.

We battle with drugs and drug houses where we live also, as I would guess most areas 'in the country' do. Although our law enforcement officers fight the trade, not try to harbor it.

Thanks again!

Here's how another poster describe, when talking about a different subject:

Its really depressing how a lot of the locals seem to reject education and economic development as some sort of horrible plot from the elite to change their lives.

If I were a non-local I would be very weary about going down there willy-nilly. Yes there are some great friendly folks, but in general the local populace is not too fond of outsiders. Take it from personal experience. Its often been said that Little Dixie is its own mini-state and they operate by a different set of rules.

I grew up in Durant ok. Way back then it was a small town with a small town mindset but it has changed. Now is it a growing nice smaller town with pretty country side, a big recreational lake nearby and hunting and golf readily available. I believe it has a great economic development group who has brought in some bigger businesses and money and jobs. Also Chocktaw, the casino is for a casino a good neighbor and employer there. It seems like a distant suburbe of N. Dallas. I live in Plano Texas now which has the things I like about a city and close by me. Yet I am only 80 miles by limited access highways from family in Durant, its a small town to keep an eye on

I am in the country side outside of McAlester. There is a big drug problem, but I haven't been affected by it on my property yet! I will say that not only do I have No Trespassing signs everywhere, you need Hunting Rights Leased. That way they think there is someone shooting already on your property. On the first weekend of hunting, I lock up my horses and dogs and pray for the cows. They all go nuts around Thanksgiving. You get a few hunters together and they are like teenage boys egg each one on. The guy who owns property near us brags about getting 11 wild boars off our property. I am sure glad he did but IF HE DID it wasn't with any okays from us. I guess coming from a Northern State we always assume one stays on ones property and you don't need No trespassing sign to enforce that.

That video is scary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Antlers is a pretty area and definitely seems for country than Durant. Could be wrong I only have driving through Durant on my way to Sherman's Sam's club.
