Does anyone know what was before the Dunnellon Walmart was built? Rumor is it was the dumps. I'm asking because many many people who have worked there for years have come down with cancers and other illness and even weird stuff such a fibromyalgia and other hard to diagnose illnesses. Another rumor was the building was built with abestos. Lowe's wanted to move next to Wal-Mart, but once they fired it was a dumping sure they backed out completely. They would have had to clean up the area and they didn't want too.

The current Walmart in Dunnellon was not built on a landfill to my recollection. There was a dump just North of town, across from Chatmire.

The current building was built less than 10 years ago when Walmart wanted to expand and did not have enough room at the old location. Not likely that they would have insulated it with asbestos.

I graduated from Dunnellon High School in 1986. Back then there was no Walmart or any fast food restaurants (McDonalds, Burger King, KFC etc.).

I did forget to mention that the Dunnellon area was primarily developed due to the abundance of phosphate mining in the area. I don't know what potential health risks that may be possible to people from phosphate or if that area was used as a phosphate mine.
