You might want to try Hilo. My sister is a doctor there since 1993 (she's a haole). Like most people have said, you just gotta be nice and laid back. Do some research if you are concerned. Hawaii is different, but it's not like it's a foreign country.

Wink why am I so white and nerdy?

It depends on how white you are. Are you *sour cream* white? Do you sunburn or tan easily? I notice it helps if you can tan well, have brown eyes and darker hair. I'm the only blond besides my kids I have yet to see on my block in Makiki. Everyone is nice but I do stick out like a sore thumb. On the Big Isle I got tanning advice from a local drunk guy on how I could be as brown as him. He even invited me to the dock where he worked so I could see how tan he was with his shirt off .

You'll probably be just fine. There are racist nut jobs everywhere, Hawaii unfortunately is not exempt.

Kaimuki,
So Kailua in Oahu is meant to have a large caucasian population. How about areas like Waialae/Kahala?

Thank you.

You know what it really comes down to it is a huge ethnicity gap between oahu and maui. Maui is more expensive to live then Oahu. But all you got to do is keep your nose straight not up in the air and you will be fine. No matter what side of the island you are on. you could go waianae and still be straight with the locals. Just be cool.

Which island we would feel comfortable, and have no worries?

Thanks!!!
Lived in Hawaii for 4 yrs, we are white, and never had a problem. People tend to treat you the way you treat them...we found the people there warm and loving to those that want to fit in.

My friend can't find a job as a nurse out here. I have heard that they hire only locals... Or that it is very hard to get a job if you are not one.
If you move here... just be respectful, friendly and soak up the slow way life moves here in Hawaii... If you don't, you won't be happy.
