Long story short, I have a possible job lined up in the low 70,000's in Hawaii Kai. Single, male, minimal debt and living in Hawaii is very much the dream. I'm weighing a commute from Honolulu, a place in Hawaii Kai or a commute from Kailua. Google Maps puts the Kailua commute at around 30-35 minutes (which I'm fine with) but I'm wondering how is the traffic in the morning and afternoon?

I'm pretty sure the traffic from and to Honolulu is bad from Hawaii Kai, so I'm thinking it may be a scenario where Kailua to Hawaii Kai is longer on the map, but shorter in practice. There are places in and closer to Hawaii Kai in my budget ($2200 max, if electricity is included), but they tend to be shared houses. I'm looking for a more traditional apartment/condo scenario and I really don't mind the drive as long as the traffic isn't backed up.

Mahalo!

Your post is all over the place so dont exactly know what you mean. The commute between Hawaii Kai and Kailua or reverse is generally about 30 minutes depending on where - but can be much worse depending on time/day. $2,200 with electricity included is likely very elusive in both those areas.

I'm trying to give as much information as possible. My question is, how long is the commute from Kailua to Hawaii Kai in the mornings and evenings. Is it prone to a lot of rush hour backup?

Thank you!

Depending on where you are starting and ending in Kailua and Hawaii Kai, it is roughly 30 minutes Kailua to Hawaii Kai in the morning. For evening, Kailua to Hawaii Kai, plan on 30-45 minutes, possibly longer on Fridays as traffic can backed up getting into Waimanalo.....

In terms of knowing about heavy traffic, Google maps w/ traffic is your best friend. Check the map on weekdays at 7am & 4pm HST and you can learn a lot about Oahu’s rush hour(s).

Your big challenge will be finding a “traditional” apartment w/electricity for under $2200 in these areas. They exist but don’t plan on getting more than 500 square ft. Hawaii Kai and Kailua are expensive areas and you’ll likely end up renting a studio apt. attached to someone else’s home. In addition, Hawaii electricity is 3 times more expensive than many other states. And then there is the cost of food, high state income taxes and car registration fees.

On $70k/yr you have to move here with a somewhat minimalist mindset. A cheap/simple lifestyle, and not be too concerned about saving money for the future.

I've lived in Hawaii Kai, it would make more sense to just find a place in Hawaii Kai and do away with the commute altogether, so you could get out onto the water, and see one of these;https://www.kitv.com/clip/14313367/g...f-maunalua-bay

Yes, that is very much an option. Really it's either Honolulu commute, Kailua commute or Hawaii Kai with minimal commute. I'm excited the job is so close to Hanauma Bay.

I think oceanus has the right idea about monitoring the traffic via Google Maps. I'm fine with a commute, given the scenery and the overall atmosphere, but I want to be sure the traffic is actually moving! It also comes down to what places are available when I move.

Thank you all!

Plaza Hawaii Kai has a 2 bedroom for $2,200/month, that is great deal - I'd stay there, save the commute and gas, and apply the gas savings to electricity - I just don't see a traditional condo including electricity at $2,200

Advice I give, is to live as close to work as possible. Saves a lot of wear and tear on car, and saves on the other payments/bills, you may have. When have to grind it out every day while you commute to and from gets old after a while.

Actually, if you work in Hawaii Kai, you could live in town (Honolulu proper). It's a reverse commute
and the traffic is not onerous. The rental options are far greater and probably cheaper depending on
your needs than Hawaii Kai. Hawaii Kai is also a 'suburb' of Honolulu proper. Lots of, single, detached
homes.....pretty boring, IMHO.
