I have just recently moved to Merrillville and I work in Chicago. I need the best way to get to chicago on the metra from Merrillville. Any suggestions?

Do you have to ride the Metra in Illinois, and is the South Shore not an option? If you must ride the Metra, then depending on where you're at in Merrillville, I'd probably take 65 north, get on 80/94 west to the Hazel Crest Metra station. That drive would probably take about 35 mins since it's all expressway driving.

If the South Shore train in Indiana is an option, I'd take 65 north to 80/94 east, then take Cline Ave (also referred to as 912) north, get off at Michigan St (also referred to as 20) and take that west until you hit the East Chicago South Shore train station on the right side. That train will take you up through south Chicago and ultimately drops off at Millenium Station (Michigan Ave & Randolph intersection).

Oh ok, the South Shore train doesn't have a stop between 57th and McCormick Place, so you may be better off taking the Metra from Illinois. There is a Metra station right there at 47th and Lake Park Avenue. The line is called the Metra Electric (ME) line. You may want to take a look at this schedule, because not every train stops at every station.

Why don't you just drive all the way into work? Merrillville to Hazel Crest is about 25 miles, and Merrillville to 47th and Lake Park is about 32 miles. It just adds a lot of time to bother with Metra.

I would highly suggest you not ride the METRA system or any train system in the area, VERY VERY DANGEROUS stuff. Constant derailments, muggings and all sorts of horrible things happen daily on these trains. Just watch the news there are at least 10-15 news segments on METRA train system alone every night.

Metra is actually rather safe.

Not sure what you are speaking of but there are literally thousands of commuters who take the Metra Electric line each and everyday without interruption.

My wife has taken this line for years and I can literally count on my hands the times she has been late or ran into any problems.

Can I ask where you live at in Merrillville? What are the best areas to stay and are there areas to avoid? I've received mixed messages about Merrillville, most of the negative is regarding school systems and unsafe neighborhoods.

That's not true. Metra trains (onboard the trains) are generally very safe. Safer than driving up the Dan Ryan to Chicago, that's for sure. What happens underneath the stairwells of train platforms and the experience onboard the train are two different things altogether. I wouldn't hang out in some neighborhoods late at night for good reason. You hurry up and get on your train & mind your own business & you're generally going to be ok.
