thanks for all of the info. What about the Lake Barcroft area of Falls Church? How are the schools? How long would the commute be to Merrifield area?

The Lake Barcroft area is very nice; aesthetically, it's as least as appealing that any of the other neighborhoods people have discussed on the thread. The commute to Merrifield would be an easy 15 minutes or so.

I believe Lake Barcroft kids go to three elementary schools - Bailey's, Belvedere and Sleepy Hollow, and all are assigned to Glasgow MS and Stuart HS. Compared to Fairfax County generally, these schools are pretty diverse, with considerably more Hispanic students and students learning English as a second language than the average county school. Sleepy Hollow ES is somewhat less diverse than the others. There are plenty of happy parents at these schools, but other parents who want their kids at schools with high average test scores and mostly White or Asian kids avoid them, which is why Lake Barcroft is relatively affordable for a pretty neighborhood that offers a short commute to both the DC and Tysons/Merrifield area.

This fairly recent (and sympathetic) article from the Washingtonian will give you a flavor for the atmosphere at some of these schools:

If I'm recalling correctly, much of it consists of homes built by Kettler Brothers in the late 1950s and early 60s, and the quality of the construction is better than in many developments from the 1970s or 1980s. Dunn Loring (22027) is another area the OP might consider, as there are occasionally properties in the $750K price range, the schools are good, and it's close to Merrifield.

Yep. I have a Kettler home and it is very well built. It is less than 10 minutes to Merrifeld.
