My husband is considering an offer of 90K in Herndon. We are a family of 4 (7 and 4 years). What communities with good schools can recommend if we estimate maximum rent for 1,800 per month?

$1800 is doable in Herndon/Reston I am younger and dont have kids but I know the schools here arnt horrible (ffx county as a whole is wonderful) but parts of Herndon have different schools than the other.. For a more family friendly atmosphere I would suggest Ashburn. I am guess $1800 will get you a 3 bedroom 2 bath townhome in the area, Mcnair Farms would be a good place to look, that area feeds into a different school district than the older part of Herndon which is a good thing I believe. Herndon/Reston is decent and I like it for the most part but its strange to me, one area is totally different than the other. Usually you can tell by driving through but that isnt always the case here. I would avoid the townhomes behind Kohls and Giant as well as the apartments on Elden across from Kohls, be safe and stay on the other side of the toll road. I live in Worldgate which is on the older side of Herndon.. not bad but the newer side may appeal more to young families. Sorry I cant provide a ton of info about schools.

I think you might find a place in Cascades. Good schools, nice neighborhood for kids. About 6-7 miles from Herndon.

You should also consider Countryside in 20165, you will be more likely to find something in your price range. It will probably be a townhouse but it is a very nice area with good schools.

I used to live in Worldgate. If you don't care about urban amenities, then going the few extra miles into Loudoun County is likely to get you a cheaper apartment and better school system.

By renting, you also avoid Loudoun's high real estate taxes.

Worldgate is in the Herndon HS pyramid; students also attend a brand new elementary school (Coates).

FWIW, test scores at Herndon are higher than those at all but two of Loudoun's 10 high schools - Stone Bridge and Loudoun Valley. Stone Bridge serves Ashburn and Loudoun Valley primarily serves communities in Western Loudoun.

There may be other reasons someone might prefer a more suburban setting in Loudoun to an large apartment complex like Worldgate, but one is hard pressed to make the argument that Loudoun schools serving folks living in apartments are going to be better than their counterparts in Herndon. Both systems are very good.
