I would "third" the rec for Del Ray. It's also not very far from the Mt. Vernon trail that runs along or near the waterfront from Reagan National Airport through Old Town and down to George Washington's longtime home.

Del Ray is really dinky, though.. like, a couple blocks of 'crunchy' commercial establishments, and a couple more blocks of cool early-twentieth-century bungalows surrounding that. If you multiplied it by ten or fifteen, you'd have the downtown area of the small-ish Midwestern college town where I used to live. Honestly, the DC suburbs are thirsting for 'crunchy' the way someone stranded on a desert island thirsts for fresh water.

I suppose finding "crunchiness" is relative in a moderate area such as NOVA. Del Ray may be as good as it gets on this side of the river but it is admittedly no Berkeley or Greenwich Village. One may find the most like-minded individuals over in Takoma Park, MD... but of course, that would be more of a fun weekend visit than a convenient commute for the OP.

How important is the crunch factor? I like the idea of McLean since it's close to the things you do, but it's not exactly what I'd call crunchy. Takoma Park in MD might work if crunchiness is important.
