Does anyone have an estimate as to how much the IT field pays in NOVA? I know this depends on experience and qualifications, but figure a college degree (MIS) and five years of network/systems administration experience. What IT positions in NOVA earn six figures? Are they mostly IT project managers?

I might be mistaken but I think for technical (non-management) jobs in six figures, there's usually a CS degree and more than 5 years' experience. These days, at least. Senior software dev hovers around the 80 to 120 mark depending on experience. I have friends with liberal arts degrees making 100K+ as sys admins/config mgmt/etc, but they've had years of experience and a military background and security clearances.

To make that kind of money, you can also make the jump from the tech side to sales - my husband has held the titles of sales engineer/pre-sales technical consultant/solutions engineer/etc.

You can make six figures in most IT fields, but some will take longer than others.

MIS and network experience doesn't really set you apart from the pack in a meaningful way. It will all depend on the company you find and the specific position. I'd estimate around $80k or so, but that's a general guess.

The job market here in DC is amazing. In with five years experience there are many opportunities to make six figures. From what I've seen, what's most important is your skill set. If you have in demand skills, you WILL get hired on projects that can afford a high billable rate. The masters degree may be a requirement for some positions so that will help. No, you don't have to be a project manager if you don't want to. Technical skills are highly valued.

The golden key to fast-track success around here in the IT field is a security clearance. I highly, highly recommend you get a position that will get you a clearance even if other companies offer to pay you more and not give you a clearance.

You can start 80k-90K here easy. Getting past 100k will be harder without a clearance.
