Hello forum!

In preparation for next week I am headed out to the store to buy a Sarah Palin costume to scare the piles of liberals here in Reston and have already purchased quite a bit of candy to distribute to the visitors I HOPE to get. Can anyone here in NoVA who lives in an apartment complex give me some indication as to how popular trick-or-treating is for apartment-dwelling families? How can you let children know that you are home and that it is okay for them to ring your doorbell (we don't have porch lights in our complex)? If Halloween is a "dud" here, is there anywhere that donated candy would be appreciated?

Thanks in advance, and BOO!

Don't know about apartment complexes. Trick or treating is hit or miss, some neighborhoods get a lot of kids and some get next to none. We usually get 50-60 kids, sometimes a little more if someone's holding a party down the street.

The Embry Rucker Community Shelter would probably like the candy. Embry Rucker Community Shelter (Reston Interfaith) (http://www.restoninterfaith.org/pages/page.asp?page_id=15288 - broken link)

Or, you could take to to work the next day. Whatever you do, don't donate it to a local dentist!

Last Halloween, the fat kid who lives downstairs said, "That's it?" to the portion of candy we gave him.

We didn't get anybody at our apartment in Fairfax last year, sorry to say.

That's what I was afraid of. I seriously don't know what to do in order to make my place more inviting to potential trick-or-treaters. Every unit looks exactly the same, and we don't have porch lights. Sigh, not being able to decorate for the holidays is going to depress me even more than being forced to live in Reston.

I don't see much of it here in the condo canyon of Landmark.

I honestly don't see a lack of trick-or-treaters as a bad thing.

I don't think there's much you can do Parents who live in apartment complexes are likely to take their kids out to SFH neighborhoods without even looking at the apartments around them. It's just a lot more fun to go door-to-door in a neighborhood than inside an apartment complex building.

That said, I don't really know how they roll in Reston!

I am truly sorry that you have to live in Reston. I know it would depress me terribly, so I can sympathize.

Doesn't the Reston HOA have rules about trick or treaters? Since they control everything in Reston, they must have rules about Halloween too.
