What would you consider to be the most popular (common) banks in these areas? I rarely have to actually go to a bank, but still want something with easy access, lots of branches and ATMs and a good reputation. I just need a basic checking and savings acct, and maybe a safe deposit box.

Wachovia, BB&T are the common popular big banks.

Burke and Herbert is a VERY popular small bank in Northern Virginia.

Fairfax County FCU is also a good option.

The big banks stink! Most of them took billions of taxpayers dollars, so why would they car about the little guy?

Sure, they lots of branches, ATMs, etc but you will pay dearly for that.

I'm in the process of severing ties with Bank of America, IMO the worst of them. It's been a lot of little things, like not taking my drivers license for ID because it was "less than 3 months old"....of course it was, I had just renewed it! The last straw was them claiming they didn't receive my credit card payment. I mailed payment the very day I received the statement, just like I always do. Somebody lost it...I can't prove who, but I'm suspicious. They socked me with late fees, interest, and probably dinged my credit to boot.

I highly recommend credit unions....mine, Apple, is amazing.

If you want a big bank, I'd say BB&T is the best of them...I do business with them because they bought the old First Virginia Bank where I had banked since I was 5 years old (over 50 years).

Wachovia failed and was bought by Wells Fargo....they just haven't changed the signs yet. I've had trouble with the Wells Fargo mortgage division, so I not going to fool with them.

Credit unions are extending their field of membership, so there are probably many that you could join. They also co-operate with other credit unions extending their reach even more.

As mentioned, Burke & Herbert is a great locally owned bank...but I think their ATMs are limited, I not sure...I don't use ATMs....

We have had no complaints with SunTrust and have banked with them for awhile. We also have accounts with Apple Federal and they have been good.

We bank with BB&T locally as well, when I first moved here I opened w/First Virginia who is now BB&T, I've heard great things about Burke & Herbert but I thought they were basically in Alexandria? I don't use ATM's either so I couldn't tell you about that aspect. We also use Virginia Credit Union but they don't have local banks here that I know of.

Is SunTrust still around? There used to be one next to our local BB&T but it's an M&T now so I assumed SunTrust was bought out.

Yes, SunTrust is still around. There is one in Burke in front of the WalMart, the Burke Center and Old Keene Mill Safeways, on Rolling by the Post Office near Keene Mill, and one on Commerce St. in Springfield.

I know people say the big banks are bad, but I've never had any problems with Bank of America. They're also very military friendly. If you can be a member of a credit union, I'm a big fan of Pentagon Federal, and I know a lot of people like Navy Federal.

Thanks for the reply, I assumed they had been bought out - I've recently seen so many M&T (as well as TD or whatever) I can't keep up.
