From N. Arlington? Google maps says about 4 1/2 hours. Would this be correct? Are there any carriers that go from D.C to that area?? Thanks for any help.

I go to Galax, Va every year to compete on my banjo....takes about 5 hours to get there. Galax is about 50 miles past Blacksburg, so I'd say 4 1/2 hours from Arlington to Blacksburg is about right.

Greyhound might go down that way...

Or you could fly to Roanoke and take an airport limo to B'burg.

4.5 hours is a good estimate. I've done it as quick as 4hrs 15min and had it take as long as 5 hours. Really driving is the only good way to get down there. Flights are expensive, and given security, save little time, and you still have to get from Roanoke to Blacksburg. Greyhound goes to Roanoke, but it goes the lonnnng way - via Richmond, and it takes 5 hours just to get to Roanoke, at which time you still have to find transit to Blacksburg. (Roanoke to Blacksburg is about a 45minute drive).

There is a service called Home Ride that runs a bus from Blacksburg to NOVA (Vienna Metro) most Fridays, and from NOVA back to Blacksburg on Sunday evenings. See Home Ride of Virginia
It is quite fast, as there are sometimes "express" busses and usually only one other stop at most (at JMU or UVA). Its a good way to go, but its designed to take students home for the weekend, so if you live in NOVA, its not much good unless you want to go to Blacksburg Sunday night and come home Friday afternoon.

So, in most cases, the best bet is just to drive.

I currently go to school at Tech and it usually takes me from 3 1/2 to 4 hrs. However, if there's a major accident on I-81 or you get stuck in NOVA traffic, it can take longer.

Yeah, but just remember that over 80 mph in Virginia is reckless driving....NOT worth a few minutes off your trip....

And all we need is more reckless driving threads on this forum!

The speed limit in rural highways has changed since I went to Tech (65 vs 55) - My clunker back then didn't even hit 80 so - not applicable..!
