Town of Herndon has a meeting next month to double their paychecks.
Currently, Council members are paid about 3000$ annually and the Mayor is paid 6000$ per year.
They propose to give themselves a raise.
6000$ annual for council members
12000$ for the Mayor
They will meet on Tuesday, April 5 and Tuesday, April 19 to debate and vote.
They remain part time public servants and are cranky that Vienna/FCC/FFXCity are paid much more
Complaints will be accepted at
town.clerk@herndon-va.gov

I don't live in Herndon, so I don't have any feelings or "say" in the matter. I just want to point at that as is common in these things, they are proposing to give the next mayor and council members a raise as the existing council members and mayor will not receive a raise while in office.

ok...so there are 6 council members, so the increase would be $18k annually. And another $6k to the Mayor, so a total of $24k annually. Assuming this spend is not offset somewhere else, that is essentially $1 for every resident of Herndon.

I can't believe it was so low to begin with. These people spend a lot of their time serving on the council, and at $250 per month (current rate), it is essentially a volunteer position. Heck, even at $500 per month....

IMO (I don't live in Herdon) - I don't see a problem with it.

Assuming they put in just 5 hours each week into their roles in the town, that means they are currently compensated at about $11.50 per hour. I would think that they put in at least that many hours in meetings and answering emails alone.

Even doubling that to $23 per hour seems rather low. I don't really understand the problem with it.

I don’t live in Herndon, but I also don’t see this as much of an issue. I’m curious to know when was the last time the compensation was raised.

You wisely mention the most important part of the vote. They are NOT voting a raise for themselves, only for the next "generation" of council members.

The council controls a 55 million dollar budget in Herndon and people are complaining if they receive 12K a year to do it? lmao

I'm OK with this. Those people are basically paid volunteers. Herndon is a big town. Please pay them.

Right, the OP conveniently didn't mention that.

Wow. Im gonna run for council so i can vote to double my untethered salary.
Someone tell Ted Cruz and AOC to rush in bills to double their paychecks, stat!
Government job raises are fine , even for Part Timers, but should be on a fixed public schedule.
Maybe raise amounts linked to the annual percentages to Fed Employees which I think was around 3% in 2021
