how bout when im comin back to chantily from alexandria at around 6:30 pm (495 north to 66 west)

without traffic, it is generally around exaclty a 30 minute drive.

are both directions of the beltway busy during the morning/afternoon commute?

mithong, you are probably looking at 1.5 - 2 hours. i do that commute in reverse everyday and it is about an hour, assuming there are no accidents or rain.

Yes, but the outer loop doesn't seem to have as many backups. I drive the inner loop each morning, and it gets pretty backed up from Braddock Rd to 66. The outer loop is generally flowing pretty well. My husband takes the outer loop from springfield to old town, and he doesn't usually encounter a backup until about telegraph. Your biggest problem will be 66 to the beltway, unless you want to do something funky like take the FFX parkway around to Springfield and then hop on something in that area (95 might work, or telegraph, or van dorn)
