Is this a real thing? Did nobody bother considering that there already is a Marshall High School SIX MILES AWAY?

So sick of this politically correct BS. Hopefully most people will listen about as much as I do to celebrity rants. Which is next to nil.

Having two Marshall High Schools is just silly.

Julianne Moore and Bruce Cohen lent their support to ongoing efforts by current and former students to change the school's name. They didn't initiate those efforts; they simply started a new petition - which now has over 29,000 signatures - after various groups, including the local chapter of the NAACP, had coalesced around the idea of changing the school's name to Thurgood Marshall HS. Both have ties to the school: Moore was a freshman and sophomore at the school before her family moved to Germany and Cohen graduated from the school.

The actual petition can be found at https://www.change.org/p/rename-j-e-...rgood-marshall. Among the supporters of a name change are several former Stuart teachers, the former principal of the school (Pam Jones), the former Mason District representative on the School Board (Kaye Kory), and the current head football coach at the school.

What is the big deal?

These are two different Marshalls.....

The school in Fairfax County, close to Falls Church, is named after George C. Marshall:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Marshall

And at the current Stuart HS, it was actually the students that first proposed the name change back in June, and the Hollywood celebrities have just added their voice/weight to the effort:
Students Urge J.E.B. Stuart H.S. Name Change - Falls Church News-Press Online

So one will be George Marshall High School and the other Thurgood Marshall High School.

That's so hard to keep them straight, isn't it?

Of all the names they could've chosen, it has to be one almost identical to a nearby HS?

"Where do you go to school?"
"Marshall"
"Oh cool which one?"
"Thurgood"

Do they think people around here have an extra couple of seconds to spare to explain where they go to school?? I know I don't

Dear lord, you are so busy you can't pronounce two more syllables? You could always shorten it to "T. Marshall", but where would you ever find the nano-second of a time to pronounce the "T"????

I'm waiting for someone to petition the changing of Lee-Davis High School & Stonewall Jackson Middle which are right next to each other in Mechanicsville VA.

Thurgood Marshall lived in Lake Barcroft. His widow still lives there. He fought to integrate the public schools, whereas JEB Stuart fought to preserve slavery. The name was not chosen at random. Thurgood Marshall had more of a connection to the Stuart area than George C. Marshall ever had to West Falls Church.

We already have a Greenbriar East and Greenbriar West ES in FCPS and people seem to be able to handle it. In practice, people would likely refer to "GCM" and "Thurgood." Failing that, the name could be Munson Hill HS, the name originally planned for the school in the 1950s. That name was ultimately rejected, even though FCPS previously had followed a practice of naming schools after their geographic locations (Annandale, Falls Church, McLean, Mount Vernon), perhaps because it was too neutral (Munson Hill had been held by both Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War). By naming the school after a Confederate general at a time in the 1950s when Virginia was under a federal court edict to desegregate, the School Board made it clear where their sympathies lay.
