With the slugging options, HOV lanes and commuter buses, the commute is identical to Springfield. Yes, for solo drivers who don't take the HOT lane tolls, it's longer but with planning and a little flexibility, the commute can be turned away from a 4-letter word.

The commuter bus winds through the neighborhoods every half hour and it's $6 each way with available seating. The last bus from DC is 8pm so the flex is there for working late. Normally I drive and their are ample slugs to pick up either at Tackets Mill or Horner (largest commuter lot in NOVA). Unless there is a wreck on HOV, then the commute (door to door) is under an hour.
I agree with your assessment of the eastern PWC commute as it relates to Fairfax; however, the OP was not even considering this, but looking toward the western side.

If your employer will pay for PODS for a certain period, that might be an option. We've used them our last two moves. Definitely takes away the pressure of unloading a massive truck by a certain time. The POD is at a remote site till you ask it to be dropped off--and then you can keep it in your driveway (or on the street with a permit) as long as you need. Maybe your job might pay for the first few months of storage, along with hired help to load it up before you move.
