I just got a job in DC right by Union Station and I'm going to move to Northern VA. I'm looking for somewhere within 30 minutes or less by car although not sure if I would drive or metro in. I'm looking for a 1 BR apartment for $1100 or less. Any recommendations on where I should live? And if you have any specific apartment complexes in mind that would be awesome too. I'm in my 20's so I would prefer to be an area with a fair amount of young people around but I don't have to be right in the middle of all the bars and everything and don't have to be right next to a metro stop either although being not too far away from one would be nice.

The top sticky about general moving to the area and "search this thread" are your friends, use them and you can find a lot of information. Then, come back with specific questions. People can give you feedback once they see your responses. Don't be a one time poster. Good luck and welcome to the area.

I don't think that an $1100 one bedroom apartment in NOVA within 30 minute drive of Union Station is possible.

Lake Braddock apartment complex off of Columvia Pike in Arlington VA has $1100 1BRs including utilities. Columbia Pike has the best bus service in NOVA with buses coming every 5 mins to the Pentagon Metro which will take you downtown.

Theres also Foxchase Apts in alexandria va which is about $1100 but doesnt include utilities, has a mouse infestation acording to some, and has poor transit access/would be like 45 mins drive to Union Station.

If you are willing to live with roommates - a popular options for twentysomethings here - then that will open you up to a lot of opportunities particularly in the "Orange Line Arlington" neighborhoods of Clarendon and Ballston which are younger professional havens.

Otherwise, your budget will severely limit your options.

Please, please consider living with roommates for at least a year or two. I didn't, when I first moved here, and it was a terrible, terrible decision for many reasons.

Given your budget you will be better off living in DC in a row home with roommates. You will not find anything more than box for $1100 living alone in VA within 30 minutes of Union.

One of my friends, before he left the area, stayed at Lloyd Apartments in South Arlington / Alexandria and paid $900-$1000 for a 1BR including utilities.

That said, aside from location, it's not the best place to live.

Other than that, I don't know of any 1BRs in the area that are less than $1500.
