I'd warn someone that, they need to have a flexible schedule. No children pick ups mid-day, no emergencies, no work day doctors visits, to make that option work. Its the one thing I hear consistently negative about VRE and the shuttle/express bus programs, that its not gonna work because "what if".

If it works, and you have a backup plan that doesnt involve you having to taxi back home in a what if scenario mid-day, then I'd say more power to you, mass transit is a great solution. I'd also say, in 2018 it will be even easier from Ashburn to Tysons (about 30 minutes by Train to the first Tysons Stop).

If you do it budget for the tollroad. Otherwise your commute will be horrid and take years off your life. You're saving money on the house by buying in Ashburn so you have to just pay more in commuting costs. Can't have it both ways.
