I remember the one in 2001 - that was the one that blew out windows in shirlington and eventually touched down in college park, killing a couple girls in a car. I was in class at the Mason Arlington campus and they dragged us out of class down to the basement level - which really wasn't any safer because it was surrounded by glass, too (parking lot level).

I also remember the one in Reston in 2011. My husband was out of town and I was worrying about where to go in our house and whether I should wake the kiddo up because it was late. It hit central Reston, mostly a golf course I believe?

I didn't realize one had passed so close to my current neighborhood near Chantilly HS.

From the map, it appears the Sept 2001 one had a direct hit on the Alexandria townhouse I was living in at the time. I had no idea it ever happened. Since it was a Monday, in the afternoon, I suppose I was at work.

NWS Sterling, VA - Virginia tornado listing by county

I looked back on this site to refresh my memory (gettin' old).

The one on Oct. 13, 1983 in Fairfax City (I believe) did some damage to Woodson High School again. The school was heavily damaged in the big one in 1973 that I told you about. I could be wrong because for some reason I thought another small twister had come through and damaged the school earlier then 1983.

If my memory is right, the one on June 24, 1996 in Centreville/Fairfax area I do remember. I worked on Dulles Airport property and left work at about 4:50 p.m. I headed down 28 and would be taking Stone Road to cut through to get off 28 and avoid the traffic (I was headed to Manassas and was cutting through to get to 66). While being at the stop light at 28 and Westfields the wind came through and it felt like my car was rocking. I saw the look on other drivers faces and they had the same reaction. Turned on Westfields and passed the Safeway shopping center and then going through the residential area, fences and trees had been damaged. I knew then that a twister had gone through.

The one on April 27, 2011 I remember. I live in Bristow. It was a large storm that came through but I didn't think anything about a tornado. Saw in the paper the next morning that some damage had occurred at the shopping center up the street (minor but still). I have to say that when weather alerts come out, they are not very good about mentioning Bristow. It is always Manassas or Gainesville that they seem to concentrate on. And there is a difference. Even though we are so close together, we have friends in Gainesville who can be having nothing happening and then here in Bristow the wind is blowing shutters off of my house (and I'm not joking).

It's always the trees that kill people, it seems. Just an observation.

my husband thought I was nuts when I begged to go sleep in our living room during isabel. The next day, someone had been hit by a tree while sleeping in bed.

I was in north reston. so, not in the path. I just remember the news was warning everyone of the risk and that storm was pretty nasty.
