The 2013 real estate assessments are being mailed today for Fairfax county. 71% had an increase. See link below for details.
Real Estate Tax Assessments - 2013 Real Estate Assessment Notices Mailed Feb. 26*- Fairfax County, Virginia

I checked mine online and there is no change in assessments from previous year. I do not understand why the townhouse/condo on the same street as mine had an assessment increase and ours did not. Specifically, I noticed this in East Market at Fair lakes community. I fail to understand the basis of this assessment.

I would just be happy that the assessment did not increase. Assessment value does not equal market value of your home. An increase in assessment value means an increase in taxes - no one wants that!

Don't worry -- convential wisdom around here is :

(what Fairfax County wants) = ( total assessed values ) * ( tax_rate )

If that assessed value goes down a little bit, guess what goes up even more?

Ouch, up over 8%.

Still a good deal lower than what it would sell for, but I enjoyed the underestimation from prior years.

Up 6% in Alexandria part of Fairfax County. It actually makes me feel better because the assessed value dropped over 3% last year right after we bought the house. Obviously, I'm not looking forward to paying more in taxes though!

Mine went up 11.7%. I checked on about a dozen of my neighbors, they ranged from 12.3% to 14.7% with one exception - the one house on the street that sold last year went up 23.0%.

My condo fell about 9% in Alexandria, which I thought was odd because purchase prices went up considerably over the last year, and no new buildings in the area came on line. I suppose I shouldn't argue it, as it just means fewer taxes for me since I'm not planning on moving any time soon.

Weird here in Reston ... Community of 35 homes with only 3 different models. Some of each model went up, some went down, and some stayed exactly the same. Makes no sense whatsoever.
