Hey guys, I just got a job in Rockville. I've got a friend who works in Reston, and we are looking to get an apartment/townhouse together. The problem is, I live a little farther south right now and don't know the area too well. Does anyone know a good city roughly halfway between Reston and Rockville where I should start looking for apartments? I can't afford anything too expensive.

Tyson's Corner is about the only place halfway between...

How would you define "too expensive?"

One of you may have to sacrifice in terms of distance. As suggested, Tysons Corner/McLean is one of the more expensive areas in the region due in large part to being the biggest job center in the region. (For that matter, Bethesda/Potomac MD is not exactly a bargain either.) Falls Church might be a slightly less expensive option. The commute to Reston wouldn't be too bad for your friend. You wouldn't be too far from the Beltway and perhaps you may even be able to take the Metro to your employer.

Reston/Herndon would be the least expensive option although that would mean a strenuous commute for you.

Thanks guys. For the record, I'll only have an entry level job with an entry level salary, so I'm not looking to spend more than 800-900 myself on rent, meaning a rent of 1800/month would be the absolute most I could spend.

That is unlikely to score you a townhouse. In fact, it would be tight for a 2BR apt in the Tysons/McLean area unless you went through a private owner.

Another factor to consider is if working 6-3 is an option for either/both of you. If it is, then Frederick becomes an option.

There may also be places in DC that work for you as single guys (or girls?) with no kids.

I think around Bethesda to AU area is your best bet. People tell me the reverse commute is really not bad most of the time.

Frederick to Reston?

If leaving at 5am, sure. I did predicate that. If the Rockville job is near the MARC/Metro, then going from Leesburg to Point of Rocks and taking MARC in becomes an option. Leesburg to Reston is no problem.

I also suggested looking into areas in DC that might not be ideal for families but would be okay for two singles.

Either that, or break the budget trying to find something in McLean.

You have any better ideas?

I would say that they should live in Reston. They'll probably get the best deal for a rental there. If the commute is more important than the best deal, then I would say Rockville/North Bethesda. The commute from Rockville is probably better than the commute from Reston. Hard to say though. Arlington or Falls Church, might be the best for a mid point between the two.
