Okay, I've decided that I want to live in NoVa. I just moved here two months ago and I am currently renting a room in Alexandria and am looking to get an apartment for myself in an area that'll give me the best "bang for the buck". Here's some basic info:

Me: Recently divorced 41 year old Caucasian male

Work: Judiciary Square in DC

I have children, but they live in NJ, so school quality not a factor. I have a car, so convenient parking is.

I don't mind driving to a park and ride and coming to work by rail.

I like to socialize and hit the happy hour scene. I'm not much of a walker, so a short drive to and from such places is desirable.

Safe is good, but I'm not helpless and don't need a gated community.

Budget is flexible, but rather be putting money in savings instead of tossing away in rent.

Currently paying $1,000 per month for room and $1,700 per month mortgage for home in DE that's under contract.

I would like to find the best place I can around $1,500+-.

So, help me out all and give a newbie some direction and advise!

Thanks in Advance!

Will you need room for visiting children, or can you manage with a studio or small 1 BR?

I would think that living in the District would work best for you, if you can find something you like in your price range--Dupont, Columbia Heights, etc.

Judiciary Square is on the Red Line. So -- Northern VA might not be the best idea.

DC or MD would be my picks. Anything along the Red Line or I-270.

In DC: I'd ask aboot
Near Northeast You're a single guy w/o kids, if you can handle a 20 minute walk, you pay zero in commuting costs. I'd still ask in the DC area for better advice)
Southwest Waterfront (ditto)
Capital Hill
Logan Circle
Dupont Circle (that might be pricey)

anything along the Red Line.

Let's see in MD...
downtown Frederick (only if you can work from home some and/or don't mind a long commute, the good thing would be closer to your kids in NJ w/o the DC traffic)
not sure what developments are like in Gaithersburg
downtown Rockville
Bethesda might be too pricey
Silver Spring
