My wife and I are looking at buying a home with $375k as our maximum price. We're not too wild about townhouses, and it seems that the only areas where there are great schools (for my newborn daughter) and single family homes within that price range are; Bristow, Chantilly and Centreville. I currently work in S.E. DC and am aware that commuting will probably be a nightmare. I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for the commute (driving, train, etc.) or if anyone knows of any other areas to live that would fit our criteria.

Thanks!

I know people that drive in from Centreville to SE DC and it's not pretty unless you are coming in early. Just last Friday, my coworker left his house at 7:00 a.m. and hadn't gotten much farther in than approaching Rossyln and well over an hour had gone by (single rider).

VRE is an option but it won't be the only leg of your trip. Figure on at least an hour and a half (which is what the VRE riders are experiencing for a door-to-door trip).

Bristow is pretty out there and far away. I wouldn't recommend that if you commute to dc. I'd do chantilly first, then centerville second. Chantilly is a tad bit closer and you have access to at least the toll road. I think from centerville, your only option is basically 66.
