I've heard a few people refer to NVCC as NOVA? They actually pronounce the word NOVA when they say it. Is that correct? It seems like it would be confusing to call it that. If it is correct, why do they call it NOVA? Where did that come from?

Most people refer to NVCC as NOVA. It's just been called that FOREVER!!! Even reading the school's website, they often use the term NOVA. Their NOVAConnect board is one example.

Exactly. I teach (adjunct) there and I have heard it referred to as NOVA for over fifteen years.

Maybe that's why I've stopped using it for the metro area (except on this forum, since it's easier to type). Nova sounds like a name for a community college, but it never sounded right as a name for the community.

Yep, I'll attest to it being called NOVA for over 30 years.

My friend, who attended about 35 years ago, said they would jokingly call it NOVA CoCo (NVCC).

Originally, most folks called it NOVACOCO...later shortened to NOVA.

Lots of folks also called it Turnpike Tech, for the location of the original Annandale Campus on Little River Turnpike.

It's heyday was during 'Nam when for a few bucks one could enroll and get their 1-S draft deferment....if, like Dick Cheney, one had "other priorities". LOL

To specifically answer your question about why, this has always been my assumption:

Northern Virginia = NOVA
Northern Virginia Community College = NOVA Community College

Just as Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is typically called the much shorter "Virginia Tech" (or sometimes just "VT" or "Tech" in this area), "NOVA" is just a shorter and more convenient way to refer to the local community college. In my experience, the context of the discussion usually makes it clear whether NOVA refers to the school or the local area.

(By the way, I actually had to look up the official name of VT...I've lived here for almost five years and never heard anybody use the full name.)

I do call NVCC as "NOVA".

I never refer to Northern VA as "NOVA". I just call it "Northern Virginia".
