Does anybody know of any good finishing schools or charm schools in the area for two girls ages 9 & 15? The ideal place would cover etiquette and social graces, along with hair/makeup/comportment for the older girl. Would be willing to travel to into metro DC/MD, but would prefer to stay in NOVA if possible. Can anybody help me out?

Certainly an obscure request. I didn't know this type of interest still exists. There are also a number of cotillion programs in the area that teach social skills at evening sessions to girls and boys.

Aren't these things that parents normally teach their kids?

Yes, and most do an awful job with it!

I wouldn't be too quick to judge here. I never heard of charm schools beyond 1950's stories, either, but a look at that website and I think it's a good idea, actually. It's one thing to teach and enforce manners at home, it's another for a child to practice it with other children in a "class" type setting. I know my kids would probably have fun learning it, particularly one of my girls.

I think if it's good for girls, it's good for boys, unless someone here wants to argue that boys have better manners than girls do.

I was taken aback as well, but I clearly remember my Grandmother teaching me (and reinforcing with all her grandchildren) a lot of etiquette and social graces that went beyond my parents just teaching good manners. I fondly remember taking tea with my rough and tumble cousins.

Hmm, I could use one of these classes. For myself.

I know there is a group in Waterford and Middleburg.

The National League of Junior Cotillions

For the one above, you enter your zip code.

The National League of Junior Cotillions

This one is Loudoun specific but they might be able to point you to one closer to your home.

Good luck.
