If you start clipping their nails when they're kittens they get used to the process. Otherwise, some of them get really get freaked out.

Also, if you use the corrugated cat scratchers, sprinkle a little catnip in the little spaces, Just a little -- it will attract the cat and encourage him/her to use the scratcher. Make sure you hide that catnip though when not in use! Good luck!

My kitties allow me to clip their claws no problem. I have always made it a point to make sure I massage and play with their feet/ toes when they are babies so they get used to it and it works like a charm. I think they just think they are getting a foot massage. Only thing about clipping is to use the curved animal (cat) claw clippers. They are easier on the claw. Using human nail clippers is not very good and can cause pain. Just make sure you do not clip too low or you will cut the quick and they will be in pain and bleed.

And no, I do not know of any vet who will declaw anymore. Every vet I have ever had refuses to do that.

Just a warning, some of the pet adoption groups make you sign a document saying they can sue you if they find out you declawed your cat.
