Well, I do know a little about it. It is the worst. But I don't know a whole lot about 66 west of the Vienna/Fairfax Metro station. We're considering moving to a house in Catharpin but my husband works in DC. I know, I know, it sounds totally nuts. But Google Maps says it's 30 minutes from this house to the Metro station, and then of course it's a little less than that to my husband's stop in DC (that much we know is true). An hour commute is normal for him. We live in Reston now.

How accurate is the Google Maps time estimate? What is traffic like out that far on 66 at about 7:30 (so yes, during the peak of rush hour)? Any suggestions for alternative ways of getting to the Metro station or downtown?

I assume you are talking about the Vienna metro station? 30 minutes might be true at 5 in the morning. Try this at 7 or later and it's likely to take at least an hour.

You should also take into account there being a backup at the intersection of Sudley Rd and Hwy 29 in the battlefield. Could take several lights to get through that intersection.

I think it's probably around 45 min. My brother used to work in DC and lived in Centreville and got off at the Rte. 28 exit onto 66. He would drive to the Vienna metro around this same time and I think he said the total trip was about 1.5 hours. Whatever the case, it probably won't be a pleasant commute for your husband.

If he can find at least one other person to ride with, he can take the HOV on 66, but even that can suck sometimes. A lot of times the HOV is the slowest lane of all.

Why in the world would he even consider that? You should just live near his work.

Why do people feel the need to do this? The OP is asking for info one one thing and you feel the need to criticize it. Moving further out usually means you can get more house/yard for much less money. Catharpin is a nice area and has some much nicer homes and a very low crime rate.

His overall commute will probably be 3 hours a day and wouldn't take much to make it 4 hours. What time will he be arriving at the Vienna metro? I believe it fills up pretty quick.

It's not that simple. We have a family and I stay home with our kids so we live on one modest income. In this area, that severely limits our options. We would love to live closer to the city, but we're not going to raise our kids in a shoebox. If I worked and the kids were in day care all day and all we ever did in our home was sleep, then yeah, that wouldn't be a problem. But we LIVE in our home. So it needs to be more than just a hotel for us.

Are there any buses with a park and ride that he could drive to?
