The sale of medical marijuana in Washington DC is apparently just a few months away. Will NoVA residents begin smuggling pot into the Commonwealth like they did booze back when there were more restrictive liquor laws here? Will DC dispensaries accept prescriptions written by VA doctors (which they can do under state law as I read it)? What do you anticipate the impacts will be?

None. Weed is pretty easy to get already. Also remember, it's still against Federal law...

Yup. It might make life a little easier for cancer patients and the elderly, however, which is a good thing.

I wasn't aware that Virginia doctors could prescribe medical marijuana for sale at approved DC dispensaries. One would wonder whether these doctors would expand the definition of medicinal benefits as I have read and seen in California. If the patients' needs are legitimate, why not just take the treatment in DC rather than risk complicated interstate issues?

This depends largely on how restrictive the D.C. law is; last I read it was much more restrictive than CA's law (anyone in CA can get medical marijuana if they try). I doubt there will be many noticeable effects.

If I'm not mistaken, Virginia was one of the first states to pass medical marijuana back in the late 70s. However, only for those with cancer and glaucoma. Those with severe chronic pain may have a choice soon. In response to an earlier poster who made the comment that pot is easy to come by and presumes what is the point in a doctor prescribing marijuana should realize there are folks under continuous doctor's care who prescribe very strong narcotics to their patients who are in severe pain, who also have a contract stating that they will take periodic drug test to make sure they are not abusing the narcotics. If they test positive for Pot they can lose that doctor very quickly. So, a prescription for marijuana is very important and not to be taken lightly.

There's already a ton of pot in Virginia. Cava, you must post a thread about marijuana like every month...
