I've just moved from Virginia to DC, and next week I'm registering my car with DC. Will Virginia refund any of the fees I have paid for my 2-year registration or 8-year drivers licence? I have about 1.5 years left on my registration and about 6.5 years left on my licence. Thanks!

I seriously doubt it. Even if they did, the amount would be so minimal would it really be worth your time?

When I returned the plates, they issued a prorated refund through a check a few weeks later.

Ditto to what oneasterisk wrote.
Print out the form that mikeva linked to, fill it out and take it to any va dmv office with your plates.

Don't expect to get very much back, tho. I had just renewed the registration fee 2-3 months prior and got about $16 back.

But $16 in my wallet is a lot better than the state keeping everything!

Not exactly what you asked, but Maryland does refunds too. My mom paid for 2 years when she moved to Baltimore, and then got 1 year back when she moved back to Michigan a year later. That ended up being more than $100 back to her.

That is really good to know! I have never lived in a state that did that (that I know of) and it is nice that is possible!

Actually, that is not uncommon in this area. We do have the largest transient Military/Federal Government (TDY, PCS, etc.) population in the country. As long as their tags are current for where they come from, it is perfectly legal.
