I have looked at all of the rental sites and craigslist and found minimal options. I am looking for 3 a bedroom house for myself and my wife. We don't have any kids but have a dog. My new job is not paying much so I will not be able to go much higher given it might take her a while to find a job. My job will be at 1875 Connecticut Avenue Northwest half way between howard and georgetown. I would hope to commute less than an hour if possible.

If you read through prior posts you'll see you won't find that in the immediate area. Why do you need a 3 BR? you'll be lucky to find someone to rent to you with a dog.

That's not necessarily true about the dog. Finding a three bedroom for 1200 would be difficult. I'm renting a three bedroom split level and the owner approved my dogs and cats, but it's a big compromise for us. This house is an older one and it's apparent that it's never been taken care of very well. I would imagine finding a nicer newer home to rent with pets would be tricky. However, as long as we could keep our pets, we'd have been willing to live in a box.

Welcome to Nova! If your job does not pay you more according the higher COL of Northern Va/Dc then forget taking a job here. My job pays $25k more a year in this area and it reflects on the COL. $1200 will get you a nice 1 bedroom further out (barely) or an ok studio closer in.

DON'T do it. Don't waste your time. You will be living worst than most prisoners here on that salary.

For that money and that job location, you're better off looking in places like Northeast DC than Northern Virginia. For a less-good commute, Prince George's County in Maryland. Safety could be an issue if you go for a really low-priced area in the DC metro.

You don't have a baby yet, so why not look for a 2 BR or even 1 BR apartment? By the time a baby is born, you'd probably be finished with your one year lease and maybe your wife would have found a job and you could afford to upgrade to something bigger then. My first kid was born when my wife and I lived in a one bedroom apartment.

Sadly there is a family of four (wife, husband, baby and 7-8 yr old) currently living in a one bedroom condo (one of the smallest models) on the first floor of my building, and this is not the first time I have seen that around here.

Please don't come here for $39,000K. Most people who take that kind of salary here are single and get several roommates. The ony exception would be if your wife is also going to work and get at least the same sort of income.

You will probably be very miserable.
