Hi - We're driving down to DC this afternoon, leaving NYC at around 1pm...which means we'll be hitting DC right at rush hour with a hungry, overtired toddler. We're staying out in Falls Church and Google/Mapquest both have us taking the Beltway to exit 50A. Is there a better alternative?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, the alternative adds at least one hour to the trip, and a bit of mileage, too. It would be to bypass I-95 and take I-81 at Harrisburg to Route 15, using 78 coming out of the tunnel, or from the NJ Turnpike if you use the Lincoln or GWB. You would follow 15, which is a Route, not an Interstate, through PA to cross into Loudoun County. That way, you would be approaching Falls Church from the west, and avoiding the slow Beltway.

I do think brooklynborndad gave some great advice about stopping in Baltimore. I would make sure that you have snacks for the child, as well as some out-of-car time before you hit rush hour on the Beltway. There are nights, and I sincerely hope tonight is not one, when it can take as long to get from Baltimore to Fairfax County as it can to get from NYC to Baltimore.

Have a safe trip!

Thanks! Just packed a week's worth of snacks and drinks. Will start looking for a good place to stop for dinner in Baltimore!
