I'm leaving work in reston this evening (probably around 6PM or so) and heading somewhere around roanoke/blacksburg. considering traffic what would be the best path to take? 66 to 81? or some other way to get out to 81?

Leaving around 6pm, there's not going to be too many ways around the initial traffic. 66 usually starts to clear up after Gainesville, so at least you wont have too much traffic to deal with for long.

You shouldn't have any problems for the western portion of 66 or 81 from there on - in my years down at VT, this was the way I always went. I think the alternate options will place you too far off course to warrant any time savings, and they would probably all have traffic also.

The only ways I know of are Rte 7 to 81 or 66 to 81. Considering the time of day you will be travelling and the alternative being Rte 7 at that time, I think 66 is still your best option.
