My wife and I are going to buy a house soon in N. Arlington and could use a good referral for a home inspector. We need someone who is thorough, informed, licensed, and can do the job promptly.

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions--thanks!

We did our home inspection recently with Dan Meier of Castle Home Inspection. He is very detail oriented and looked at even the minute details. We are very happy with his work. Hope that helps....

Thanks for the referral, v2009. I think we're going to use the guy gkunni recommended--but that's good to have as well.

Virginia does not license home inspectors (only about half the States do).

All you need is a flashlight and some business cards and you're ready to roll. The good line of BS is a plus also...

Membership in ASHI may be something to look for.

We ended up using Dan Meier of Castle Home Inspection (www.castlehi.com). And as gkunni said, he was fantastic. He was actually there early and had walked around outside the (unoccupied) house and found a few things already. He explained everything he found, answered my many questions, and was very knowledgeable, friendly, and professional.

Dan found stuff I would never have noticed--e.g., the insulation in the crawl space was upside down, with the vapor barrier on the bottom side (which the installers had removed, I guess to mask their error). He even turned on the oven and the gas fireplace--and discovered that the fireplace blower was kaput (even though the flames came on great).

The report he sent is very thorough and has lots of digital photos. He is a certified ASHI inspector and has a lot of training, as listed on his website. His fee is quite reasonable (about $400 for a 3BR/2BA, 1500sq ft house).
