what is ppl citing as reason for increase? In Alabama where We are from Alabama power lowered their rates 4% beginning on jan '10 bills citing lowered costs for nat gas and coal to run the generating plants. But if it's going to get that bad we are going to invest in some other mode of generating at home, wind, solar, whatever is renewable and "free"

The whole entire concept of electricity is to HELP mankind get things done. It should not be a significant expense of life. That negates the purpose and utility of it.

I'll share the windmill with you...I have an all electric home supplied by PP&L.........
I love my electric heat. I've had trouble with many other heat types.
But, if it is going to cost an outrageous sum........I'll be offering to buy David Webbs unused Pellet stove.

this is just the distribution rate. i think you have to pay the same distribution whether you went to a competitor or not.

That is correct. The bill separates distribution (use of local wires), transmission (from the power plant onto the grid), transition (slush fund) and generation (the power plant).
From 1 year ago:
Distribution $2.89, 2.63, 2.48 (about 1/3 of your bill)
Transmission $.75/kW (about 8% of your bill)
Transition $1.21. 1.07, .99 (declining scale as you consume more - about 1/10 of your bill)
Generation 5.95, 5.23, 4.80/kW (declining scale as you consume more)

From my latest bill :
Distribution $2.90, 2.64, 2.49 (@ the same as a year ago)
Transmission $.32/kW (@ 1/2 of a year ago, the smallest part of your bill)
Transition $.25, .21, .20 (much lower than last year, but a small portion of the bill -declining scale as you consume more)
Generation $10.13/kW (flat rate now for the powerplant), the biggest part of your bill, 66% higher than a year ago, and 66% of your bill)

All of the above is explained on your PPL bill

It is Generation charges that were capped for many years, and in 2010 that cap was lifted, so that is the big increase we all just experienced. You can now choose among generators. But the wires are owned by the same folks, regardless of which supplier's energy they are bringing to you.
If they've now asked for a increase in Distribution charge, it shouldn't be as drastic on your monthly budget, as it is a smaller portion of the whole
