There was a little article in the Sunday Times about a new business in the Petersburg area of Scranton. It talks about a small business district forming there, with Mansour’s Market, a throwback ice cream parlor, eatery and corner store, the Green Onion tavern, and a new house and life interior design office and gift shop. Some of the quotes from the article:

“A lively city needs an eclectic mix of pleasant places to shop and eat,” she said, noting that her store was modeled after shops in the SoHo neighborhood of New York City.

“I want to offer something that can be part of the revitalization of the Hill.”

Mansour's is truly an awesome place; it is something you wouldn't expect to find in the rather "hidden" corner of the Upper Hill known as Petersburg. I'm a firm believer that over the next 5-10 years the Hill Section will continue to become more gentrified. Drug dealers will be moving out, and their homes will be purchased and renovated into historic showplaces by middle-aged couples, young professionals, empty-nesters, etc. I'm also happy to hear he is developing lofts nearby (I'm assuming directly across the street in the building that looks as if it's being renovated). Attracting more middle-class to upper-middle-class people into the Hill Section will help to pump more money into the city's tax base via the wage tax and will provide a larger customer base to patronize existing businesses and encourage new ones to become established. The rehabilitation of our buildings with ground-level commercial space and upper-level residential space is exactly what this city needs, and Paul Mansour should be very proud of what he is doing to help the revitalization of the Hill Section. I only wish I could stick around to experience its rebirth.
