Do you want to run the risk of being the 100th person on the list when the cold weather really sets in, or do you want to be next on the list for Joe the Plumber when the weather is still nice?
I generally do this about the first of September. (A reminder insert usually arrives with my gas bill). Not the same as "turning on the heat" - more like "checking the furnace". When I want to turn on the heat, I generally just talk real nice to it. <smirk>

the temps can vary widely .. lots of reasons.
turn it on for a while in the morning when your cold .. it may keep the house warm all day
best solution is get a thermostat with a lot of setting options
set for your schedule as you can always over ride the settings

Dont forget the good ole hot water bottle thing. It is a smallish rubber bag you fill with hot water. Keeps you nice and warm so you don't have to have the house heat turned up too much
