Why did they purchase that land? I'm betting it has something to do with charity or social programs.

They rent the old acme building next door . They sell the stuff people give them there .

so I guess you can call it a second hand shop ..

They just redid all the blacktop when there was nothing wrong with the old blacktop .. That was a waste of money .

I googled the question ..

Salvation army . where does all the money go?

here is what I got back

Salvation Army: where does your money go? (history and overview of philosophy and services)(Cover Story) - Consumers' Research Magazine | HighBeam Research - FREE trial

""Still, the Salvation Army happens to rank as the most popular charity in America. In 1995 it raised significantly more revenue directly from the public than any other single charitable organization: $741.7 million, more than half again as much public support as the American Red Cross, the second most popular charity, which raised $465.6 million, and almost double the American Cancer Society, the third most popular with $381.6 million, according to a recent analysis by NonProfit Times, a trade newspaper. (In terms of total revenues, which include fees from program services, sales to the public, government funding, etc., the Army ranks fourth, with $1.4 billion, after the YMCA, at $2 billion, Catholic Charities, $1.9 billion, and the Red Cross, $1.7 billion.""

I cut an annual check to the Salvation Army each year, and make sure I drop something in every Xmas Pot I see.

IMO - they do much needed work for people in the immediate area, contributions are spent locally for the most part, and their administration cost ratio is much lower than other high profile orgs like Red Cross & United Way. (CEO salaries comparisons shed some light).

They all do good work, but I'm partial to the Army.
That's just my opinion.
