I'm house hunting in some of the lake communities in Milford with my partner from NYC and was looking for one that had more privacy (maybe bigger lots) and less of a family vibe. Can anyone recommend any?

Milford is convenient for commuting to NYC ,but it has a very strong "family vibe" There is an influx of newer people, but mostly from traditional i.e. heterosexual families.
If you visit when there is some sort of an art festival or music thing you will see a lot of tourists and may come away with the idea that this is an open and accepting panacea in the woods.
That is not true.
We are a hetero family who does not quite fit the mold of what some of these rural PA areas are looking for, and we have learned to stay close to the cities.
Sometimes just being from NY with a child adopted from another race can invoke wrath. Or the "wrong" political bumper sticker. That can be dangerous.
I do noy think that there is a gay community in Milford.
Good luck to you both! Perhaps concider a weekend retreat.

monkey - if your priority is privacy, you may be better served by looking at properties outside of "lake communities".

Thanks for the feedback. This would be a second home for me and my partner but it seems that everything for sale is in a lake community. I'd love to find something in the woods on at least 2 acres but that's heading into super expensive territory.

If privacy is a concern then why advertise your lifestyle?? Wouldn't just be easier to look for a community regardless of how you chose to live your life?? The less they know the better for you I would think...I mean does any community you chose to live in need to know how you prefer to live?? There's always going to be some up/downs in wherever you go...public stating your lifestyle just gives them a heads up before you move in...and in some cases that has led to harassment and vandalism of property because they didn't "that kind" to move in their neighborhood...just a heads up and a thought on my part...

If you have to hide who you are, then what is the point of living in a community? The whole idea behind community is that you're supposed to get to know people and be friends with them. What kind of relationships are you going to be able to forge with your neighbors if you always have to be introducing your partner as your "friend"? Pretty sad.

By "privacy" I meant that I wanted a place that provided peace and quiet because I live in an area that is super congested and people living on all sides of me, not because I wanted to do stuff in secret as your reply suggests.

perhaps your initial post threw some folks a curveball when you stated "less of a family vibe".

monkey,

I do have a co worker who is gay and looking for somewhere near route 611, non gated community. HE told me there are some resort that is gay friendly.
that being said... it is true, most of pocono that i have seen so far are family oriented traditional southern baptist / United Methodist, Presbyterian, church family. even if they are not christian, they are hetero.

I'm not sure where the above posters live (and I'm not gay) but I work in the Milford area and have seen and heard of quite a few same sex couples in the area. I'm sure they are living *somewhere*. I agree with trying to find something *outisde* of one of the communites though. I think you'll be much happier in the long run in that respect. When it comes to quite and privacy, the Milford area lakes communities are not what they used to be (seasonal homes with little use). The area has turned into a bedroom for NYC and northern NJ, and thus it is FULL of young, growing families. If your looking for quite, privacy, and affordability then I suggest looking a little further west on I84. Something closer to Lake Wallenpaupack.
