I don't know if it would help but you could consider becoming a railfan :-) There are people who are obsessed with everything about trains and who love the sound of the trains blowing their horns and couldn't sleep without it. Maybe for starters you could take some short train trips and see if you can catch the bug and start seeing everything in context of the romance of the rails.
Partly tongue in cheek but I've been around some of those people. There are some very active railfan forums on the net, Amtrak Unlimited springs to mind, www.discuss.amtraktrains.com
Were out Rain , Snow , Sleet , Blizzards , Heat Wave , chasing trains at night through the plains , sitting next to crossings , down into the depths of the subway system or getting our face winded blasted by a 150mph train...its a great hobby that always pays off...
I lived in a place like that once. Eventually you get used to it, and you barely even register it anymore. Until then, you might want to invest in some earplugs for when you sleep.

LOL thanks for the suggestion but I am not interested in trains. The ones I rode in Japan were bullet trains and really quiet but other than that I can't stand it. but anyway, I have a cheap apartment and I guess I am getting what I am paying for!
Just to let everyone know, I have experienced the tain that passes Sawyer, ND too and it goes way too fast and honks it's horn all crazy too! A friend of mine lives right near the tracks.
