My dad has friends over on friday and saturday nights and one of them is a farmer. I slightly overheard a conversation about a lot of them might be losing their contracts with Phillip Morris because of overseas farming. Correct me if I heard this wrong but thats what I comprehended. Plus, Jan 2nd will end smoking in public restaurants.

With this being one of the biggest tobacco states if not the biggest, how bad do you think it will hurt our economy? I personally don't smoke but I do it believe it built a lot in this state and continues to do so.

What is your opinion?

The continued outsourcing that many companies do not only hurts North Carolina but the whole country. And I think our farmers and small business owners will continue to be hit hard. In fact I believe they are an endangered species. It is difficult now to find and patonize small businesses as the mega companies have taken over everything. Long gone are the days of the corner drug store and grocery store. We have become a society of convenience so if we can one-stop shop at Wal-Mart, what the heck.

I work in Burlington and drive by the closed mills every day. Knowing that they once employed hundreds of people who made quality goods leaves me feeling, well, sad. Times change and things evolve, but until the American people take a stand against out-sourcing by boycotting companies that do and until our state and the whole country stop making it easy for companies to do this, things will only get worse.

I can't find it right now, but if you Google something like "products made in the United States" or something similar, websites will come up that shows products that are made here and not overseas. And from what I recall when I first heard about it, there are quite a few. Supporting these companies can only help our ecomomy.

As for the farmers who will most likely lose their farms and way of life, my thoughts and prayers are with them.

As for the smoking ban, I am sure people will still go to places even if they can't smoke. They can do it before they go in and when they leave. I just think the out-sourcing is the bigger problem along with the decline in the numbers of people smoking.

RE: your question about tobacco..

from a GDP perspective: 'baccer is the state's #1 agricultural export, worth about $573 million.

from an employment perspective: agriculture (in general) employs very few North Carolinians, less than 1% of the labor force.

RE: is NC's economy going to get worse?

probably. North Carolina is highly involved in banking and manufacturing, both of which are suffering from oversupply and crushing deflation.
