hi. i just registered my car in NC today and got my regular plate. i had seen a specialized plate on the dmv site for the state parks. but when i went to the office they said it had been approved by the govt but weren't being distributed until they had 300 applications. so i'm applying online, but any idea how long it will take for these to start going? like where do they keep track of the number of requests? there's nothing on the website, even to indicate on the order form that it's not immediately available.
I guess when the DMV receives 300 or more paid applications, the order goes into production and distribution. If they need further assistance, you can contact Kay Hatcher in Raleigh at (919) 861-3575.
hopefully im not #1, because theyre not starting til they get 300... boggles my mind. if they're offering them, they should just offer them. making me wait an indefinite period makes me want to not get one... it's like only polling people who want to answer a survey... it's a self-limiting exercise.
I don't know about other states, except Virginia. I believe Virginia would need to have at least 250 orders before making license plates available. Like NC, VA has numerous specialty plates.
On a side note, I think the specialty license plate craz is getting a little out of control. So many states have so many different license plates right now, I would imagine it must be harder on law enforcement to do their jobs. However I do like the new NC "Ducks Unlimited" plate and might consider getting one for my car when I renew my plate today. I think NC's plate is getting kinda boring and they should try and come out with something new.
i dont like NC's regular plate, which is why im doing an alternate. ducks unlimited is my second choice, but i think my wife is getting that. as far as law enforcement, i think if you have the money and inclination to buy a special state parks plate, you're probably not really a big threat to society ;-)
I'm not fond of the NC plate, especially with that red font on the letters. At least now they've wised up and returned to blue font. I'll keep that one.
I also refuse to pay anything extra each year to the DMV for a special plate. They get enough of my money for our vehicles already.
