I wouldn't be concerned until I looked into some of those stats. Numbers do not always tell the whole story. Marion is really a very nice place - and scenic.

I used to live in Marion and we always locked our doors. My mom lives there now, and always locks her doors. I have a good friend who is a county sheriff, who says that it is a good idea to lock your house and car doors.
They have a pretty intense meth problem, which drives up the crime rate.
You are going to have to get off the beaten path to live the way you've described. Maybe Avery or Mitchell county.

Well really, there is no place in America anymore where I wouldn't personally lock my doors Yes, some of our mountain areas do have meth problems but I'd lock my doors there to prevent thefs, not because I'd be afraid of bodily harm. Lots of kids still go out to play without needing to be watched constantly (above a certain age of course!), but they do that here in Charlotte too. The whole world is not so dangerous that we all have to retreat to the boonies for that

The crime rate in Western NC is below the overall statewide average. That being said, the latest crime report from NC's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) indicate these are the Mountain Region counties with the lowest rates:

1. Yancey
2. Avery
3. Madison
4. Clay
5. Ashe

Data from the counties of Mitchell, Graham and Alleghany is incomplete.

Default Doors unlocked...

As you all know I live in Rutherford County and have done so pretty much my whole life except for the 12 years I spent in Winston Salem, Charlotte and Nashville TN. When you look at crime statistics in an area, IMO it's all relative. I do know a lot of people in this county that still go to bed at night with their doors unlocked (my inlaws do!) As a Realtor, I'm amazed at how many clients have told me to "go on in, I leave the door unlocked" I could never be comfortable doing that, because I've been exposed to a different culture by living in a larger city. I feel like I live in a very safe area of western NC, I haven't check our crime statistics against those in other areas, because I don't believe that you ever get a true picture based on statistics sites, whether it's schools or crime they always seem skewed to me. I feel the best way to really see an area is to visit, talk to the locals, ask questions and then base your opinion of an area on that PLUS facts.

The days of not locking doors are gone forever no matter where you live!
Better to be safe.
