I'm looking at visiting a state next year for a couple of weeks holiday and am thinking of North Carolina, however I don't know an awful lot about it.
I went to Texas for 3 weeks this year and absolutely loved it. Is North Carolina in any way similar?
Tourist attractions aren't really my thing, it's more about visiting new places and meeting new people, Texans were incredibly friendly, do people in North Carolina have the same 'southern hospitality' thing going on?
Finally, I'm 28 so enjoy going to bars, live music, American football etc - are the cities in NC good for this? I know you have the Panthers, not sure which college football teams you have?
For bars/music scene, you should consider Asheville, Charlotte, and the Triangle cities of Chapel Hill, Durham, and Raleigh. The Wilmington area is also worth a visit--the city is not as big as some of the others, but it has the tremendous advantage of being on the coast so the beaches are close by.
NC has the luxury of having beautiful mountains and beaches within a day's drive of each other, so you could split your time between the two if you want. There are many college football teams here, including the University of North Carolina, North Carolina State, Duke, Wake Forest, Appalachian State, East Carolina, and many other smaller ones.
That's a great time to visit. Daytime highs in the 60's (12-18C?). If you visit in October, visit the mountains and see the autumn leaves in color. Try to drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway and plan to go during the week when not as busy.
Come in the Summer and go to MA, especially Boston and surrounds including Cape Cod and Marblehead. Much more to do and Boston is a walkable city with public (subway "the T") transportation.

Actually, I agree. Or Phikadelphia in the spring or fall.

Place close attention to the comment in bold. Depending on where you are, drive to the closest beach from Charlotte, NC (Southwestern NC) is 3-4hrs. So if you are driving from the mountains to the beach..it is a trek. Regardless, for the mountains..yes NC is the best. Personally not too excited to drive 4 hours to get to the beach.
