Lulz. There are some gay people anywhere - however it sounds like the OP should keep reading up on Rocky Mount. It's widely regarded by locals here in the way people discuss Baltimore MD, or Akron OH. It gets no repect.
I'm sure there are, but it's a conservative part of the state. I went to ECU in Greenville and there's a gay club there. That's about 35 minutes away, though. If you're looking for a vibrant and out community, I think it'll be hard to find there.
