Would welcome comments, suggestions, etc. regarding Hickory NC from residents such as nice subdivisions or neighborhoods? How is the economy around Hickory? Do you see planned growth there? How is the weather in the winter?
The large areas in red toward the eastern part of the state look ominous. Do you have any idea what would cause or has caused such a loss in population in that area? thank you for the information on weather also.

Limited employment opportunities would be my guess.
Perhaps people are trying to escape a poverty environment, or perhaps there is the old "flight" issue by the non-major part of the area's population. It's just conjecture, which is likely best served by a more academic study.
Candid observation Garth, thank you. Hickory is looking good even though there was a big loss of employment from the furniture business leaving. From what I've read in other articles (non-marketing), the area is seeing growth. As long as it is planned, controlled growth, that would be fine. Not an invasion of developers as is taking place in the mountain areas.
Hickory a pretty nice city. Hwy 70 that runs east to west thru Hickory has most of the commercial businesses. Hickory has a mall, Vally Hills Mall, new movie theatre, and new businesses and shopping coming. The city has planned very well for this growth, unlike most other areas of NC, particulary the Lake Norman area. But Hickory has Lake Hickory, thats in the north west part of the city, where alot of the bigger, nicer homes are, and Dale Jarrett lives in that area too.
IMHO Hickory has one of the best year around weather patterns of anywhere in the country. Four seasons none of which are extreme. The closer you get to the mountains the cooler it is. If it does get hot in the summer head for the hills!
An area I always recommend is the Grace Chapel area. It is in Caldwell County with cheaper taxes but has a Hickory address.
Since you are in nearby Lenoir, what is your opinion of the growth, or lack of it, for the job market in the area? If you drive to the Charlotte airport from the Grace Chapel area, any idea of travel time? Thanks !
