I've always heard SECU was good and that Credit Unions are better than banks. I've been a state employee for a year now and I haven't had the best experience with SECU. SECU has taken over a week, on multiple occasions, to process checks I've made for rent and again for house hunting. The service in person also has been less than friendly at times. To their credit, I was very pleased with over the phone customer service located here in state, and with their ability to resolve an issue when my account information was stolen through an online transaction.

What's your take on SECU? What do they offer that you don't get at typical banks? I can only speak for myself, but I've had a better experience with BB&T who I'm financing my home with, but I may be missing something.

My experience with them has been fantastic, and I've been a customer for more than 25 years (I'm aging myself, I know). They've been very helpful with me buying and selling homes as well as retirement money management, questions by phone and in person, etc. They've also saved me a boatload in fees that I would have been charged to handle if I had used a bank. Therefore, I'm surprised to hear about your experience. Are you using one or two locations in particular that aren't working for you? Are there other problems you're encountering that you haven't written about here yet?

I like them for some things, and prefer Navy Federal Credit Union for others.

I like SECU for:
-1% Money Market Account - Great place to park money
-Lots of locations locally in the Triangle
-Friendly service (at the branches I've been to)
-Good amenities - discount amusement parks, free notary, free coin machine

I like Navy Federal better for:
-Lower mortgage rates
-Technology is better
-Better CD rates and CD pop-up special rates

Exactly, their goal is to help customers, not rip them off.

Unlike the giant monster mega banks.

I've been a member for 18 years and love banking with SECU. The employees have always been very friendly and helpful. I've done mortgages, car loans, and open end revolving loans with them. Never had an issue.

Very odd that you've had multiple problems with them, but you ought to hear the problems I hear from people who use regular banks. SECU is a good place to be; even if you quit using them as your main bank, never shut your accounts out completely because you may want to come back someday.

And, if processing checks is a recurring problem, can you consider having automatic bill pay taken directly out of your account? I'm afraid checks in general are starting to become somewhat "anachronistic" in the world at large.

Go online and write their help desk--they are always very helpful any time I do have a (minor) issue.

Not all credit unions are equal. There are some in some states that behave just as badly as the monster mega banks, but for the most part, I've heard nothing but great things about the NCSECU. I have desperately tried to talk my wife into moving all of our money into the credit union, but she just will not budge from Wells Fargo. I can't stand WF.
