I was wondering if you had to of went through BLET before you can attempt to become a State Trooper in NC.

No. If you're not already BLET certified, you'll get that in the Academy.

But it's a very tough & long process to be accepted into the Basic School. Contact the recruiter in your district at your local highway patrol office to find out more information and to get an application.

Joining HCHP is not like signing up for a local PD or Sheriff's Dept. It will be much closer to going through basic training in the military.

If you want to join, I hope you can learn fast and have a really strong tolerance for pain. You'll most likely wind up eating a pretty fair amount of pepper spray. (Source: father is retired NCHP and a current speaker in rotation. Also, lots of friends in NCHP)

If you can hack it, it's a great job to have.

You do not need BLET to apply. However, without your BLET you will attend the full academy which is 29 weeks. The 29 weeks will include the first half which will be your BLET, then the second half will be much more focused on the trooper part.

If you have your BLET (Basic Law Enforcement Training) then you are eligible for the "short school" also known as the "fast track", which is solely the trooper portion of the school.

My brother and son are both in corrections. When I went to my son's graduation I was pleasantly surprised to see how military is was. The training was very tough and they also had to be pepper sprayed and went through a lot of both physical and mental training. My nephew is a cop, same thing with him. When I graduated with my criminal justice degree I interned with our state police, it was intense at times but I really loved it. Regardless if you are going for your local PD, Sheriff's dept. or State Police, the training is intense.
